GameBoy on Raspberry Pi

In this tutorial, we will see how to install a Game Boy emulator on the Raspberry Pi. To do this, we will use an emulator platform called RetroArch, which is available on the Raspberry Pi.

What is RetroArch?

RetroArch is an open-source software that serves as an emulation platform on the Raspberry Pi, allowing users to play retro video games.

With RetroArch, you have the ability to install different emulators for various retro gaming consoles like the NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and even arcade systems.

This means that instead of downloading and configuring each emulator individually, users can simply install RetroArch and choose the emulators they need to play their favorite games.

RetroArch supports a wide range of controllers and gaming peripherals, allowing users to play with their preferred controller, whether modern or retro.

Here is the command line to download RetroArch:

sudo apt-get install retroarch

We now need to install the Gambatte emulator, which works with RetroArch and allows you to play Game Boy games. To do this, you must open Add/Remove Software by clicking on Menu, then Preferences, and then Add/Remove Software. Once the page is open, you should type RetroArch in the search bar at the top left.

To install Gambatte, you need to check the following items:

Once checked, click Apply and then OK to install them. You will need to enter your password beforehand.

Once all the components are installed, we’ll see how to use RetroArch. To do this, click on Menu, then Games, and then RetroArch:

When RetroArch starts, you arrive at Load Core. This allows you to load the Gambatte emulator within RetroArch:

Once you click on Load Core, you should select the first one:

The final step is to return to the RetroArch menu in order to launch your Game Boy game. To do this, click on Load Content:

Once you click on Load Content, you can select the bar that corresponds to the root of your Raspberry Pi. Then, simply locate your Game Boy ROM so you can start playing:

Once you have located your game on the Raspberry Pi, all that’s left is to launch it:

Arduino Factory is not responsible for your downloads!

To use the emulator, you will need to download and install Game Boy games. This is only legal if you own the original Game Boy version of the game. Arduino Factory in no way encourages the illegal downloading of video games.
